Latest! POCA Gives More Power To Police To Combat Serious Crime... @NajibRazak @Zahid_Hamidi

KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 5 (Bernama) The police will launch another operation to combat serious crime after the Prevention of Crime (Amendment and Extension) Act (POCA) 2013 is gazetted, which is expected to be done soon.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said this was because POCA would give more power to the police to inspect, detain and arrest suspected criminals.

He said as announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently, the operation would differ from the recently concluded crime-prevention operation, dubbed Ops Cantas, which was implemented before the POCA was gazetted."The new law will give us new power. We will implement and take all the necessary actions as stipulated under the POCA," he told reporters after attending the 'Bicara Tokoh' talk show programme and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the police and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), here, Wednesday.

Under the POCA, which was extended to Sabah and Sarawak, the length of detention period was reduced from 71 to 60 days and Section 28A of the Criminal Procedures Code to be adopted.

Besides, POCA would also enforce the use of Electronic Monitoring Device (EMD), setting up the Crime Prevention Board, witness protection, stricter surveillance signals, and a sunset clause, that the act was due for review every five years.

POCA targets on organised and serious criminals, especially as it allows for detention without criminal charge or trail, similar to that provided in the repealed Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960 and the Emergency Ordinance 1969. BERNAMA
